In a statement, the secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, accuses the ministry that directs Cintra of “serious human rights violations and abuses in Venezuela, including torture or subjugation of venezuelans to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” for their positions against Maduro. The measure also extends to the children's minister, Deborah and Leopoldo Cintra González.

“the Dismantling of the democracy of Venezuela to the base of terrorizing the venezuelan people into submission is the main goal of the MINFAR and the cuban regime,” continues the statement, which concludes with a call to the international community: “We strongly encourage other Governments and international organizations to continue promoting the accountability of the cuban regime for their involvement in violations and abuses of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba, Venezuela and beyond.”
