It is appreciated Perels "unwavering commitment against right-wing extremism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia". Solomon Perel was born in 1925 as the son of a Rabbi in Peine. The family moved in the 1930s, to Poland, to escape persecution by the national socialists. Salomon, called Sally, escaped the shooting by German troops only because he kept his Jewish identity a secret. He served under the name of Josef "Jupp" Perjell of the Wehrmacht as an interpreter and in 1943, completed his training as a toolmaker at Volkswagen in Braunschweig. In 1948 Perel left Germany in the newly founded state of Israel to emigrate. Only decades after the end of the Shoah, he processed his experiences in his autobiography, "I was Hitler youth Salomon", which was also made into a movie.
