TikTok prohibits deadnaming and misgendering from its content

TikTok is updating community guidelines in order to ban misogyny, deadnaming and misgendering.

The changes, last year's report from GLAAD stated that TikTok, and other top social media platforms are "effectively unsafe" for LGBTQ users.

TikTok stated that its new guidelines were designed to "further support both the well-being and integrity of our community." We value transparency with our community and these updates clarify and expand on the types of behavior or content that we will remove from our platform ...".

According to the updated community guidelines, hateful ideologies are now more clear. The guidelines explicitly ban content that targets transgender and nonbinary people "through deadnaming or misgendering." Deadnaming is the act of calling transgender people a name they don't use anymore.

TikTok will not tolerate any media that promotes conversion therapy.

TikTok stated that such content was already prohibited. However, "we've heard from creators as well as civil society organizations that it is important to make this clear in our Community Guidelines." Users can now add pronouns and other information to their profiles.

The social media platform claims it has already removed content that promotes eating disorders. However, the guidelines have been adjusted to reduce disordered eating.

Conversations with experts led to the decision to end the promotion of disordered eat. Experts recognized that people can have "unhealthy eating habits" without being diagnosed.

TikTok also published its latest quarterly Community Guidelines Enforcement report. Over 91 million videos, or 1% of all uploaded videos, were deleted during the third quarter 2021 due to violations of the guidelines.

About 1.5% of all videos that were taken between July and September 2021 were due to hateful behaviour. This includes hate speech based on race, sexual orientation, gender, and other attributes.
