Newcastle won a sixth consecutive home Premier League victory thanks to Miguel Almiron's goal. The team also beat Crystal Palace 1-0 on Wednesday.

Almiron's goal in the 32nd minute, his first since February 2013, was enough to propel the Magpies into 11th, 15 points above the relegation zone.

Bruno Guimaraes, who had taken Emil Krafth's throw in on his chest, lifted a pass above full-back Tyrick Mitchel and scored the goal. Almiron ran away, before firing a shot over Vicente Guaita's goalkeeper and into the far post.

Four minutes later, the Paraguay international lost a second attempt when the keeper dived to its right to claim his dipping effort. Guaita had to also deal with Guimaraes' long-range effort.

As Palace was trying to make a comeback after a defeat in the FA Cup semis, Newcastle spent the majority of the final 30 minutes camped within its own zone. Substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta, Odsonne Edouard and Wilfried Zaha failed to test the keeper's ability with headers.
