Here's a look at Wednesday's European soccer action:

ENGLAND

Manchester City, winner of the League Cup for four consecutive seasons, will continue its title defense with a visit to West Ham in 16th place. West Ham defeated Manchester United in round one. They are having a great season and have been placed fourth in Premier League. Two other all-Premier League matches are scheduled -- Burnley vs. Tottenham, and Leicester vs. Brighton. Meanwhile, Liverpool travels to Preston in second-tier after a 5-0 win over Manchester United which extended their unbeaten start to this season. Brentford also visits Stoke in the second tier.

SPAIN

Barcelona will be trying to bounce back from its defeat to Real Madrid in the Spanish league "clasico", when it visits Radamel Falcao’s Rayo Vallecano. This team has won all four of their matches at home this season. Sergio Aguero, a veteran striker, will make his debut for the Catalan club after he moved from Manchester City. Madrid could win the league title by beating Osasuna at home, which has won four out of six matches. Sevilla is tied with Madrid in points and could move up to the top of league standings when it visits Mallorca. Real Betis hosts Valencia in an attempt to move closer to the leaders.

FRANCE

In a rescheduled league match, Marseille hosts third-placed Nice on a neutral field. Due to crowd trouble, the Round 3 match in August was cancelled. It will now be played behind closed doors at Troyes' Stade de l'Aube. French football has been plagued by poor fan behavior throughout the season. Marseille fans were once again at fault in last weekend's 0-0 draw against bitter rival PSG. There were incidents both inside and outside their stadium. Nice is now fourth in the standings, with Marseille just one point behind.

ITALY

After three of the best coaches were given red cards, Atalanta's Gian Piero Gasperini, Inter Milan's Simone Inzaghi, and Roma's Jose Mourinho were all expelled. With a win at Empoli, third-place Inter will look to maintain pressure on the top two. Any slip up and it could be leapfrogged by Roma, which travels to relegation-threatened Cagliari. Atalanta, Juventus and Sampdoria are three points behind Inter. They play Sassuolo and Sampdoria, respectively. Fiorentina has 15 points, and is only one point ahead of Lazio. It meets in the evening match at Rome. Lazio, which is visiting Udinese, will still be reeling from the 4-1 defeat at Hellas Verona.

GERMANY

Bayern Munich was eliminated from the German Cup by Holstein Kiel in the second round of last year's competition. This season, Borussia Monchengladbach will face Bayern Munich. Their August match in the league was a draw. Two other all-top division games are scheduled. Cologne hosts Stuttgart and Bochum plays Augsburg. Bayer Leverkusen plays second-tier Karlsruhe.
