Alex smith, who was the coach of Gueugnon winner of the League Cup in 2000, died of a heart attack in the night of Friday to Saturday at the age of 66 years, announced his former club, the USL Dunkerque, in a press release. The death of the former midfielder, who was also the coach of Brest and Sedan, occurred at his home in La Turbie (Alpes-Maritimes), according to the regional daily la Voix du Nord, who has revealed the information.

Born in Dunkerque, a club where he will carry out the majority of his playing career and his debut on the bench, Smith had his biggest success during the season 1999/2000. At the head of Gueugnon, then in D2, he had won the League Cup at the expense of PSG (2-0), qualifying his team for the UEFA Cup: a unique feat in the history of a competition which, ironically, had its last edition on Friday night.
