"He was not only a friend to many, but also a very dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather."

The defensive player belonged to in 1966, together with his younger brother, Bobby, to the English team, which won with a 4:2 after extra time against Germany in the legendary final at London's Wembley stadium.

Charlton completed games 35 countries, and 773 encounters for Leeds. After the end of his career as a player in 1973, he also worked as a Trainer. With Ireland's national team he won in 1988 at the European championship finals in Germany in the first game, ironically against England with 1:0.
