World Cup 2022: Strange mishap: France star played with gold chain – despite Fifa ban

Before the kick-off of the round of 16 game between Poland and France, everything seemed to be going as usual: marching in, national anthem, team photo. Aside from the star-studded teams, there was little that stood out. But that changed quickly when the game started. Many observations did not focus on superstars like Kylian Mbappé or Robert Lewandowski. Nor was it about sporting achievements that flashed, but something glittering on the neck of French defender Jules Koundé.

Just a few minutes after the start of the game, with Koundé only having the ball a few times, the first users on Twitter noticed the Barca player's extravagant jewelry. You might think half as wild, tastes are known to be different. However, according to Fifa regulations, it has been banned since 2005 to wear jewelry in football games - whether watches, bracelets or necklaces.

ZDF commentator Oliver Schmidt also noticed the forbidden piece of jewelery from the French. "If it was a mistake, he has to take it off, if he hid it, it's even yellow," says Schmidt.

Co-comment Sandro Wagner, on the other hand, was amused by Koundé's accessory and showed understanding that he had run up with a chain: "Maybe it was so expensive that he was afraid it would be stolen in the locker room. I still know that from the district league , some boys preferred to leave their valuables on their wrists or around their necks when they were playing," says Wagner with a wink.

Whether on purpose or not, the fourth referee apparently called after just under 20 minutes because he had seen the necklace. Shortly before half-time, the Barca star actually had to take them off. However, he did not receive a yellow card.
