Tennis star Jannik Sinner led the Italian Davis Cup team to the semi-finals. The world number four secured his home country a 2-1 victory against the Netherlands with two wins in singles and doubles.

In the semi-finals in Malaga, Italy will face the winner of the fourth and final quarter-final between Serbia and Great Britain, which will take place on Thursday evening. Finland and Australia qualified for the first semi-final on Friday.

Sinner, who was only stopped in the final by Serbian Grand Slam record winner Novak Djokovic at the ATP finals of the world's best tennis players last Sunday, initially succeeded with a 7:6 (7:3), 6:1 against Tallon Griekspoor equalized 1-1 against the Netherlands. Shortly afterwards, the 22-year-old also stood in for Simone Bolelli in the doubles; together with Lorenzo Sonego, he defeated Griekspoor/Wesley Koolhof 6:3, 6:4.

The German Davis Cup team missed the group stage of the traditional team competition due to a qualifying defeat against Switzerland at the beginning of February. Captain Michael Kohlmann's team managed to stay in the relegation game against hosts Bosnia-Herzegovina.
