Matchday 6: Freiburg fails to return to the top against Gladbach

SC Freiburg has missed the return to the top of the Bundesliga table.

Both teams created numerous chances in the goalless draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach. There were no goals, however, because in a fast-paced encounter it was primarily the two goalkeepers who stood out. There was no getting past Freiburg's Mark Flekken and Yann Sommer in the Borussia case.

In the end, the point was not enough for the Freiburgers to overtake 1. FC Union Berlin, who had previously won in Cologne. They are now in second place with 13 points. Borussia, unbeaten away from home in seven games in all seasons, is four points behind Sport-Club in eighth place in the European Cup.

Weigl: "The point is okay"

Those involved were satisfied after the draw: "I think it was a good 0-0 today," said Freiburg striker Michael Gregoritsch on the internet broadcaster DAZN. Gladbach's newcomer Julian Weigl said: "The bottom line is that the point is okay."

The fact that the Freiburgers are endowed with a large portion of self-confidence after just one defeat this season was already shown in the early stages. In the second minute, Ritsu Doan, who scored in the 2-1 opening win in the Europa League against Karabakh Agdam, seamlessly continued Freiburg's performances so far. However, the new signing curled the ball past the far post (2').

On the other side, Lars Stindl (4th) missed. The offensive man was one of three changes in the starting line-up made by Gladbach coach Daniel Farke compared to the 1-0 loss to 1. FSV Mainz 05. Stindl was joined by Marvin Friedrich and Julian Weigl in the starting XI. For Weigl it was the first appearance from the start after moving from Benfica Lisbon. He arranged the game in front of the back four and on the offensive Florian Neuhaus (5th) and Marcus Thuram (9th) radiated danger.

Gladbach fears for Neuhaus

Both teams often looked for the direct route to the goal. The hosts ran into Borussia's defenders early on and thus forced ball losses. As a result, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, who made his debut at Freiburg, appeared free before summer. But the goalkeeper was there (16').

The guests also played fast forward. Jonas Hofmann escaped his opponent, but found his master in Flekken. The Dutch national goalkeeper kept the upper hand against Thuram a little later (29th). Then the guests had to change because Florian Neuhaus injured his knee. He returned once more to the interior of the stadium on crutches.

The game did not lose its pace even after the change of sides. Doan was offside in a promising attack by the home side (62'), Flekken once again won the duel with Stindl (65') and Sommer also continued to collect plus points against substitute Woo-Yeong Jeong and against Michael Gregoritsch (77'). /79.).
