Indoor Athletics Championships: Eitel all-around on course - favorites win over 400 meters

The German track and field athletes did not allow another surprising medal to follow the glamorous start of the European Championships on the second evening of the final.

On Saturday, when long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo easily qualified for the final with her best performance of the season, Kira Wittmann, who came seventh in triple jump in Istanbul, achieved the best result from the point of view of the German Athletics Association when Turkey's Tuğba Danışmaz won. Unlike on Friday, the DLV athletes did not start with podium chances. At the end of the title fight on Sunday there are more chances for medals again.

Apart from Mihambo, who finished second in qualifying with 6.87 meters behind the Serbian outdoor European champion Ivana Vuleta (6.98), other German EM participants are also hoping for success under the roof of the hall. In the pole vault, Torben Blech from Leverkusen presented himself in good form with 5.75 meters as second in the qualification.

Manuel Eitel in third place after four disciplines

The all-around athlete from Ulm, Manuel Eitel, is in third place after four of seven disciplines. In the high jump, he surpassed his height of 1.76 meters by 25 centimeters. The Norwegian Sander Skotheim is surprisingly in the lead after day one ahead of the decathlon world record holder Kevin Mayer. The Swiss top favorite Simon Ehammer is no longer in the medal race.

Over 800 meters, Majtie Kolberg (23) qualified fifth for the final with another personal best time of 2:01.49 minutes. There were favorites over 400 meters on Saturday in the Ataköy Athletics Arena. Olympic hurdles champion Karsten Warholm (Norway) was the fastest in 45.35 seconds, three-time Munich European champion Femke Bol (Netherlands) won in 49.85.

On the other hand, the Italian Samuele Ceccarelli surprisingly won over 60 meters ahead of compatriot and double Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs in 6.48 seconds. For Robin Ganter in 6.68 seconds and for Yannick Wolf in 6.70 seconds, the semi-final was the end of the line.
