Future after the World Cup: England's Gareth Southgate wants to take his time

Gareth Southgate explained on Saturday night that he needed time to think about his future after England's World Cup elimination.

The Three Lions were again unlucky with a penalty as Harry Kane missed a late equalizer after scoring from the penalty spot early in the second half.

Aurelien Tchouameni's opener from long-range and Olivier Giroud's header was enough for Les Bleus to reach the semi-finals against Morocco and retain the 2018 title.

Questions about Southgate's future as England manager continue to be raised, but after the quarter-final defeat he did not hint at a decision on his future role.

"I think after every tournament we sat down and thought," Southgate told ITV Sport.

"It takes a bit of time to make sure everyone makes the right decision."

Southgate took over after the Euro 2016 debacle - apart from a brief stint by Sam Allardyce - and led England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup before losing in the final at Euro 2020.

The side had performed well at the 2022 World Cup, beating Iran, Wales and Senegal and a difficult draw against USA.

The defeat against France ends their hopes for this year, the next World Cup tournament will take place in North America in 2026.

"We were here to try and win the tournament," added Southgate.

"We believed we could do it and we showed tonight against the reigning world champions that we have a side that could have done it."
