Football: Liverpool advance to the League Cup quarter-finals

Liverpool FC are in the quarter-finals of the English Football League Cup. Coach Jürgen Klopp's team won the round of 16 game at league rivals AFC Bournemouth 2-1 (1-0) and, as record champions, can continue to hope for League Cup success number ten.

Cody Gakpo fired Klopp's team into the lead after 31 minutes in the pouring rain. After the equalizer by ex-Leipzig player Justin Kluivert (64th), Darwin Nunez scored the winning goal six minutes later. Compared to the Premier League match against Nottingham Forest (3-0) at the weekend, the ex-Bundesliga coach changed his team in eight positions.

United getting deeper into crisis

Defending champions Manchester United and coach Erik ten Hag are getting deeper and deeper into the crisis. After the clear 0:3 league defeat in the Manchester derby against City on Sunday, the Red Devils also suffered a clear 0:3 (0:2) against Newcastle United.

Miguel Almiron (28th minute), Lewis Hall (36th) and Joe Willock made the 2023 League Cup champions' exit perfect. Many spectators left Old Trafford well before the final whistle. The pressure is getting greater and greater for Coach ten Hag.

Arsenal lose London derby at West Ham

Runner-up Arsenal FC, however, were eliminated from the League Cup. The Gunners lost the London derby at West Ham United 1:3 (0:1). Ben White (own goal/16th), Mohammed Kudus (50th) and Jarrod Bowen (60th) were successful for the Hammers. Martin Ødegaard was able to reduce the score to 1:3 shortly before the final whistle (90.6).

Chelsea FC are in the round of the top eight thanks to a 2-0 (1-0) win against second division club Blackburn Rovers. League rivals Everton FC (3-0 against Burnley FC) and Fulham FC (3-1 at Ipswich Town) have also reached the next round.
