Europa League: Coaches Fischer and Union are aiming for the winter in Europe

Union Berlin and coach Urs Fischer definitely want to play in the European Cup again next year. "We are of the clear opinion.

When you enter a competition, you want to achieve the best possible result. And that certainly means that we will try to spend the winter in Europe," said the Swiss before the start of the Europa League on Thursday (6.45 p.m. / RTL) against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise from Belgium.

President Dirk Zingler had previously made a similar statement. "I wish that we hibernate in all three competitions." In addition to the Europa League and the Bundesliga, that would be the DFB Cup. In theory, Union could also play internationally outside of the Europa League in the coming year: namely if the team comes third in its group and is relegated to the Europa Conference League.

Zingler: "Not so surprised" by success

The Köpenickers are unbeaten in competitive games this season and are fourth in the Bundesliga with the same number of points as FC Bayern Munich. Zingler was self-confident about the excellent start: "I'm not as surprised as others." He sees what is done at the club every day, what the organization is doing.

Together with managing director Oliver Ruhnert, the presidency draws up a concept before each season. "We are often months ahead of what is obviously emerging. And then we keep our fingers crossed that it works." That has worked more often than not in recent years. Zingler particularly emphasized the stability and professionalism of the organization. "We're trying to clear away as much as we can so everyone can focus on the sport."
