Champions League: Despite being out: Benfica coach Schmidt draws a positive conclusion

Roger Schmidt has after the quarter-final knockout. drawn a positive conclusion of the Champions League season with Benfica Lisbon.

"We played fantastic football in international competition. We played 14 games and only lost one of them," said the German coach after the 3-3 draw at Inter Milan. Benfica had only lost the first leg against Inter 2-0 in this premier season - and otherwise survived the qualification, the group phase and the round of 16 without defeat despite strong opponents such as Juventus Turin or Paris Saint-Germain.

Although Schmidt has been without a win with his team for four competitive games, the appearance in Milan gives him courage for the championship, in which Benfica lead the table by four points. "The team always believed in themselves. They never gave up, even when we were 3-1 down. I think that 3-3 was important," said the 56-year-old. "We have to accept that, congratulate Inter and take today's performance into the remaining six games in the league."

Nicolò Barella (14th minute), Lautaro Martínez (65th) and Joaquín Correa (78th) scored for the Italians on Wednesday evening. Fredrik Aursnes (38'), António Silva (86') and Petar Musa (90'5) scored the goals for Portugal's record champions. Inter now meets city rivals AC Milan in the semifinals. "The semi-finals are a dream, we work every day for nights like this," said Inter coach Simone Inzaghi.
