Bundesliga: Schalke wins basement derby – Hoffenheim crisis continues

FC Schalke 04 has achieved the next important success in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. In the basement duel at VfL Bochum, the Gelsenkirchen team celebrated their first away win in the Oberhaus since November 2019 with a 2-0 (1-0) win and are no longer bottom for the first time since the tenth matchday.

TSG Hoffenheim is still deep in the crisis, losing 0-1 (0-1) at FSV Mainz 05 and thus conceding the sixth bankruptcy in a row.

FC Augsburg clinched their fourth home win in a row in a 2-1 (1-1) win against Werder Bremen. Third-placed Union Berlin drew 0-0 at home against 1. FC Köln in the race for a place in the Champions League. The game between Borussia Mönchengladbach and SC Freiburg also remained goalless. Borussia Dortmund had already won the top game against RB Leipzig 2-1 (2-0) on Friday.

Riemann initiates Schalke victory

Schalke had hoped in vain for a win in 38 Bundesliga games away from home. Then Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann helped the Royal Blues with a curious own goal in the 45th minute. Marius Bülter (79th) made everything clear for the guests. This means that Schalke, with former Bochum coach Thomas Reis, remain unbeaten in the second half of the season and are again just behind the non-relegation places.

On the other hand, it is becoming more and more threatening for Hoffenheim, even the new coach Pellegrino Matarazzo simply cannot stop the crash. Leandro Barreiro (33rd) scored for Mainz. On the relegation rank, TSG is now tied with 19 points with the penultimate Schalke and the new tail light Bochum.

Winter access Dion Beljo (6th) and Arne Maier (46th) shot FCA to victory in Augsburg. Jens Stage's goal (16') wasn't enough for Werder.

Next damper for Union

Another small damper was set for 1. FC Union just under a week after the 0: 3 at Bayern. In a weak game against Cologne, the Berliners lacked the usual efficiency.

However, pursuers Freiburg could not capitalize on this. With the changeable Gladbachers it was only enough for one point. The Breisgauers missed the leap to fourth place and remain fifth. Gladbach's Ramy Bensebaini received a yellow-red card shortly before the end (87th).
