Australian Open: Swiatek as the first tennis player in the third round

World number one Iga Swiatek was the first tennis player to reach the third round at this year's Australian Open in Melbourne.

As expected, the 21-year-old Pole defeated Colombian Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-3 in the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday. At the start last Monday, Swiatek defeated the Wimbledon quarter-finalist Jule Niemeier from Dortmund in two sets and is the top favorite for the women's title. Last year she had already triumphed at the French Open and the US Open, plus a Grand Slam triumph in Paris in 2020.

While it was possible to play in the Rod Laver Arena and in the two other covered stadiums in Melbourne Park, the outdoor courts did not start playing due to rain. Among other things, the first-round duels of Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria against the Italian Lucrezia Stefanini and Laura Siegemund against Lucia Bronzetti from Italy could not start as planned. Both matches fell victim to the rain on Tuesday.
