Ski racer Alexander Schmid is far behind after the first run of the giant slalom at the Alpine World Championships in France.

The Allgäu native, who sensationally won gold in the parallel competition on Wednesday, is 3.06 seconds behind the leading Austrian Marco Schwarz before the final in Courchevel (1.30 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport) and is only in 19th place. His teammate Fabian Gratz ( 5.63 seconds) is in 35th place.

Second is downhill world champion Marco Odermatt from Switzerland, third is Zan Kranjec from Slovenia.
