Alpine skiing: Shiffrin the sole record holder after the 87th World Cup victory

US star Mikaela Shiffrin has celebrated another sporting victory and has become the sole record holder in alpine ski racing.

The 27-year-old raced to her 87th World Cup success in the slalom in Are, Sweden, leaving former technical specialist Ingemar Stenmark behind. The Swede had won a total of 86 World Cups in his career. With her triumph in the giant slalom the day before, Shiffrin had already drawn level with him at the top of the all-time list. Now the exceptional athlete from Colorado is enthroned there alone.

Shiffrin won in Are by almost a second over second-placed Swiss Wendy Holdener. Third place went to local hero Anna Swenn Larsson. Germany hopeful Lena Dürr, who won bronze at the World Championships in France in February, finished sixth. Her teammates Emma Aicher and Jessica Hilzinger finished 11th and 20th.

13th win of the season

For Shiffrin it was already the 13th win of the season, the sixth in their prime discipline slalom. The American has long since secured her fifth overall World Cup victory, and the small crystal globes for the best slalom and giant slalom driver of the winter can no longer be taken from her at the season finale in Andorra next week. In addition, she won three more World Cup medals in February, including gold in the giant slalom.

Stenmark had emphasized several times in the past few weeks how much he begrudge Shiffrin the record. The seven-time world champion reported that she had recently been in contact with the now 66-year-old and that he had sent her several video messages. Quite a few experts trust Shiffrin to break the mark of 100 World Cup victories in the long term.
