In the week-long dispute over the continued operation of nuclear power plants in Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is making use of his directive authority for the first time since the traffic light coalition took office. The SPD politician ordered on Monday to create the legal basis for the continued operation of all three nuclear reactors Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2 and Emsland that are still in operation until April 15, 2023 at the latest. The chancellor thus decided to strike a balance between the demands of the Greens and the FDP. With a possible continued operation of the nuclear power plant in Emsland, he sat down over the rejection of the Greens and accommodated the FDP. By contrast, fixing the terms until mid-April 2023 at the longest corresponds to the demand of the second-largest coalition partner. FDP boss and Finance Minister Christian Lindner had demanded terms until spring 2024.
