US President: Biden on the 2024 candidacy: Too busy for the campaign

US President Joe Biden has once again made it clear that he wants to run again in the 2024 presidential election. "My intention (...) from the beginning was to compete again," Biden said in an interview with US broadcaster ABC. "But there are too many other things I need to do in the near future before I start campaigning." Therefore, the 80-year-old said that the time for a "mature" election campaign was not right now.

The Democrat had repeatedly signaled in the past that he would like to run for a second term. However, there has been no official announcement so far. Given his advanced age, however, even within Biden's own party there are reservations as to whether he would be the best candidate. Biden would be 81 at the next presidential election in 2024, 82 at the start of a second term and 86 at the end.

Should Biden officially enter the race for the White House, he should not face any significant competition from the Democrats. Prominent contenders for the Republican presidential nomination have so far been ex-President Donald Trump and former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.
