State Electoral Committee: Berlin Returning Officer: Draft is not the end result

Berlin's state returning officer, Stephan Bröchler, pointed out that the draft for the final result of the February 12 repeat election, which became known on Saturday, is not yet official. "The state election committee has to decide on this at its meeting on Monday," said Bröchler of the German Press Agency.

At the same time, he pointed out that the committee had received an application for a recount of the result in a constituency in the Lichtenberg district. If the committee approves the application, the determination of the official election result for the state of Berlin would have to be postponed until the count was made in Lichtenberg. In the constituency in question, a CDU direct candidate is only ten votes ahead of an applicant from the left, who now wants to be counted again. It is unclear whether the application will be granted.

SPD is 53 votes ahead of the Greens

On Saturday, the draft for the official final result of the repeat election became known through a report by "Bild am Sonntag". According to the documents that were sent to the nine members of the election committee and that are also available to the RBB and the German Press Agency, the wafer-thin lead of the SPD, which is in second place, over the Greens has shrunk from 105 votes in the preliminary result to 53 votes now - with around 279,000 second votes for both parties.

Accordingly, nothing would change in the percentage shares of the parties that were provisionally determined shortly after the election. The CDU clearly won the election with 28.2 percent. SPD and Greens both got 18.4 percent with a mini lead for the SPD - from now 53 votes. The left came to 12.2 percent in the election, the AfD to 9.1 percent. The FDP flew out of parliament with 4.6 percent.

Exploratory talks are still ongoing

According to this, Prime Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) could remain in office if the previous coalition of SPD, Greens and Left continues. CDU election winner Kai Wegner, on the other hand, wants to form a coalition with the SPD or the Greens. It is still unclear who will enter into coalition negotiations with whom. The exploratory talks between the parties have not yet been completed.
