More and more boat people are coming from North Africa across the Mediterranean to the EU. In the first ten months of this year, 90,000 people fled to Europe on this dangerous route – 50 percent more than in the previous year. Most of the ships that rescue refugees from the sea head for the ports of southern Italy. For this reason, Italy has been pushing for a fairer distribution of asylum seekers among the member states for a long time.
