Russian invasion: war against Ukraine: That's the situation

In view of widespread corruption, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj has dismissed the heads of all military replacement offices nationwide. In doing so, the government in Kiev reacted to numerous cases in which conscripts paid bribes in order not to be drafted into the defensive war against Russia. As a result, more than a hundred criminal proceedings have already been initiated. Ukraine has now been defending itself against the invasion of Russian troops for more than 17 months. In the counter-offensive, their army is making slow progress.

Heavy fighting broke out again today, Friday, with many dead, including civilians. Again both capitals were the target of attacks. According to the authorities there, Kiev was attacked with Russian "Kinschal" hypersonic missiles, which were largely intercepted. A column of smoke rose in the west of Russia's capital Moscow after an attack with a drone. According to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, no one was injured. To be on the safe side, Moscow Vnukovo Airport temporarily ceased operations.

USA announce another billion dollar package

After more than a year and a half of war, Ukraine can count on another aid package worth billions from the USA. President Joe Biden wants to ask Congress for a total of $13 billion in military aid.

In Germany, the debate about further arms deliveries picked up speed. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is coming under increasing pressure to allow the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles. There are also growing calls from within the coalition to give Ukraine the weapon system that can be used to destroy bunkers and command posts up to 500 kilometers away. The chancellor told the "Thüringer Allgemeine": "There is no new state of affairs to report on this issue."

Zelenskyj: bribery is "treason"

With the dismissal of the regional heads of all substitute offices, Zelenskyy wants to end the widespread practice of illegally buying one's freedom from military service with money. In times of war, corruption means "treason against the country," he said in a video speech. In the future, former front-line fighters should also be responsible for conscription - those who "can no longer be in the trenches because they have lost their health and their limbs, but have retained their dignity and are not cynical". A total of 112 preliminary investigations were initiated against employees of military replacement offices.

Prices of several thousand euros

The case of the already dismissed head of the Odessa authorities caused a stir. He is said to have collected several million euros since the beginning of the war. The prices for documents on a certificate of unfitness or provisions are in the thousands of euros. General mobilization has been in force in the Ukraine since the beginning of the war. With a few exceptions, men of military age between 18 and 60 are no longer allowed to leave the country. The United Nations has so far registered more than 9,000 civilian deaths. The actual number is likely to be significantly higher.

Again several civilians among the victims

Half a dozen rocket explosions were heard in the three-million city of Kiev on Friday. According to the military administration, rocket debris was found in a northern part of the city, including on the grounds of a children's hospital. Nothing was initially known about injuries. According to official statements, several civilians were killed or injured by Russian shelling in attacks in the south and east of the country. The military administration of the north-eastern Kharkiv region also reported massive Russian shelling. Information from the war zone often cannot be checked directly independently.

Ukrainian counter-offensive makes little progress

Previously, Selenskyj had repeatedly asked his compatriots not to lose their will to resist. "We do not forget our main goal - to win the war and not lose the country," said the president in his evening video address. His troops are currently under pressure, especially on many front sections in the south and south-east. According to the General Staff report in Kiev, Ukrainian troops advanced in only two places on Thursday. As of Friday, the war had already lasted 534 days.

Zelenskyj: Working on alternative grain export routes

Because of the blockade of the Black Sea ports by Russia, Ukraine is working intensively on developing alternative export routes for grain, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "We are doing everything possible to ensure that Ukraine continues to be a guarantor of food security," said Zelenskyy in his evening video address on Friday. The people of Ukraine also need access to world markets. The President reported in Kiev that he had discussed the issue with the heads of the army, the secret service and the Navy, as well as government officials.

USA as the most important ally

Ukraine is receiving massive support from the West. The United States is considered the most important ally. According to the Department of Defense in Washington, since February 2022 alone, they have provided or pledged more than $43 billion (around €35 billion) in military aid. In addition to the new arms package, there will be $7.3 billion (€6.6 billion) in economic and humanitarian support for Ukraine and other affected countries.
