Response to stern research: Politicians demand the extradition of Attila Hildmann: "Total failure" of the Attorney General's Office

After the star succeeded in tracking down the right-wing extremist former chef Attila Hildmann in Turkey, several federal politicians from the opposition and the governing parties are now demanding Hildmann's extradition.

"Of course, the public prosecutor's office has to apply for extradition," said Martina Renner, spokeswoman for domestic politics for the left, the star. Since it is now known that Attila Hildmann only has German citizenship, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann must also ensure that Hildmann is no longer allowed to spread anti-Semitic hate speech. "The Justice Department has been slacking off for far too long," Renner said. Germany is obliged to fight anti-Semitism.

Michael Breimann, spokesman for the Union faction for political extremism and anti-Semitism, is also demanding consequences. "The federal government must now submit an extradition request as quickly as possible and with great emphasis and arrange for the transfer from Turkey to Germany in order to bring one of the worst anti-Semitic hate preachers to legal proceedings," he told Stern.

The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office accuses Breimann of "total failure". It was a "tangible scandal" that the authorities wrongly assumed that Attila Hildmann was protected by Turkish citizenship.

Not only the opposition, but also politicians from the government factions are critical. Green domestic politician Konstantin von Notz considers Attila Hildmann and his supporters to be "highly dangerous". The handling of his case so far has "revealed the extensive inability of government agencies to deal with the problem with the necessary constitutional determination."

The German authorities must now "finally act decisively and apply for Hildmann's immediate extradition." The prominent case sends out a significant signal, which is why it is long overdue for the authorities and political leaders to finally document democracy's ability to defend itself.

Lamya Kaddor, domestic policy spokeswoman for the Greens, told Stern that "all the stops are pulled out immediately" in order to bring Hildmann "to the German judiciary as quickly as possible."

Konstantin Kuhle, deputy leader of the FDP parliamentary group, expects "that the responsible authorities will pull out all the stops to ensure that Atilla Hildmann is extradited to Germany." Kuhle sees the responsibility for this primarily with the responsible public prosecutor's office.

Kai Wegener, leader of the CDU parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives, accuses the Berlin Justice Senator of "setting the wrong priorities". "Hildmann was arrested several times, then warned of the impending arrest, was able to flee to Turkey and evaded prosecution there to this day. The justice senator must explain how such omissions can be prevented in the future," he told the star. The Berlin prosecution authorities would have to be better equipped in terms of personnel and technology.

The statements are based on research by the star. After weeks of searching, a stern reporter succeeded in finding the exact whereabouts of Attila Hildmann in Turkey. The former chef had gone there months ago. The Berlin Attorney General is looking for him with an international arrest warrant. The investigators accuse the people of hate speech, threats and other crimes.

Attila Hildmann is the author of numerous cookbook bestsellers. In Berlin he ran two vegan snack bars. In the corona pandemic, Hildmann attracted attention with right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic statements.

Last week, stern revealed that Attila Hildmann, contrary to statements by the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office, does not have Turkish citizenship and could therefore be extradited to Germany.
