Energy supply in Europe: Von der Leyen: Putin has "clearly lost the energy battle"

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin has failed to blackmail Europe by reducing energy supplies.

"Putin has clearly lost the energy battle he started, and his blackmail didn't work," the politician told the German Press Agency and other media during a visit to the Troll A gas production platform off Norway's west coast.

She stressed that the EU is now much more fueled by allies like Norway and the US. In addition, Europe has invested heavily in renewable energies and reduced energy consumption by 20 percent.

"So if President Putin planned to bring us to our knees, he has achieved exactly the opposite. Today we are stronger and more independent than we have ever been."
