Conflict : Taiwan thanks Germany for support against China

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen thanked Germany for supporting the island's democratic republic on the international stage.

At today's reception of members of the Human Rights Committee of the Bundestag in Taipei, the President particularly emphasized Germany's commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait Straits as the current chair of the Group of Large Industrialized Countries (G7). She also mentioned the Bundestag resolution for Taiwan's participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA).

China regards the island only as part of the People's Republic and threatens to conquer it. Beijing is also attempting to isolate Taiwan internationally by blocking the country's membership of international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO). In general, the Chinese leadership firmly rejects official contacts from other countries to Taipei, such as the visit by members of the Bundestag. Tensions around Taiwan have recently escalated.

The visit by the six MPs, which lasted until Wednesday, is the second visit by a Bundestag delegation this month. The group led by the FDP politician Peter Heidt also includes parliamentarians from the SPD, the Greens and the Union.
