Wednesday Addams: The modern gothic look to recreate

What would Wednesday Addams wear? Many fans of the Netflix series about the gloomy daughter of the famous Addams family - played by Jenna Ortega (20) - are asking this question at the moment. Oscar-winning costume designer Collen Atwood (74) was inspired by London street style and today's teenage looks for her outfits, as she explained in an interview.

It was very important to her to transfer the classic Wednesday style into the modern age. No wonder that the Netflix series has triggered a new fashion trend: The Wednesday looks are not only dark and gothic, they also thrive on their Y2K vibe.

Although Wednesday Addams strictly rejects social media in the series, her style inspires people on social networks with its modern interpretation. Atwood has limited the outfits to two basic colors: black and white. To do this, she plays with different textures, materials and surfaces in the garments.

If you want to get particularly close to the classic Wednesday style, you can use the outfit from the first scene of the series as a guide. In it, Wednesday wears a high-necked black midi-length dress. An oversized collar and cuffs in white provide a strong contrast and are reminiscent of the Addams daughter's look that has been known for decades.

In the new series, her wardrobe has been expanded to include some items of clothing suitable for everyday use: her repertoire includes a black, tight-fitting leather jacket, a black and white striped sweatshirt and a black XXL hoodie jacket. Not to forget the "Nevermore" uniform, consisting of a white blouse, a tank top, a pleated skirt and a blazer. Black tights, black chunky shoes and the two braided pigtails are also part of Wednesday's standard. Gothic vibes meet a classic college look here.

However, one look from the series is the most memorable for most fans. In the fourth episode, Wednesday wears a black, airy evening dress to the prom. Despite the ruffles and romantic details, the dark glamor look is by no means girly or playful. The dress is from designer label Alaïa's Fall 2021 collection, according to costume designer Atwood.
