US songwriter : indie pop by Caroline Rose: Beauty out of Sorrow

This album will probably be in the best lists of many music magazines by the end of the year. Because the American songwriter Caroline Rose has created an outstanding indie pop work with "The Art of Forgetting". The 33-year-old wrote catchy melodies on it, set them to music with guitar and co. and then ran them through modular synthesizers. This created a very special sound.

It's about loss and grief. "Triggered by a difficult separation, Rose began to go deep within herself and unconsciously dug up long-buried childhood experiences," says the music agency in charge. The songs are punctuated by voice overs of Rose's grandmother - who "apparently lost her memory" around this time, the musician wrote in an announcement accompanying the album.

"The Art of Forgetting" is a kind of musical coping with grief that transforms bad experiences into overwhelming songs: with epic arcs of tension and great emotional impact. The album offers a number of outstanding tracks. The single "Miami", for example, which begins with a few acoustic guitar chords and suddenly rises to a powerful dirge with a heavily distorted electric guitar and stumbling beats. The accompanying music video attracted attention. Seemingly played backwards, it stars Rose as a woman who, with her partner, has all sorts of adventures at night before being left lonely on her bedroom floor.

Or the song "Rebirth": At the beginning, Rose's alienated vocals bathe in quiet synth waves, until a lost ukulele and then powerful beats set in. A gripping song that could well be imagined as the theme song of a science fiction series, for example. Rose experimented a lot overall. String arrangements swell up and down, harp and piano tones lose themselves in nirvana, or a guitar drones suspiciously.

"Everywhere I Go I Bring The Rain" is an indie rock anthem whose euphoric vocals contrast with the sad lyrics. Musically, the piece is more reminiscent of Rose's previous albums. The musician, who grew up in upstate New York, released her debut in 2012. Over time her music has evolved from blues and folk more towards indie pop. "The Art of Forgetting" is her fifth studio album - and probably the one that will bring her the most attention so far.
