Host country Great Britain is sending the English singer Mae Muller into the race at this year's Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). The 25-year-old announced this herself in a live broadcast on BBC Radio 2.
Like Germany, as a major donor, Great Britain is certain to participate in the ESC final on May 13 in Liverpool. Muller then wants to build on earlier successes of British candidates with the song "I Wrote A Song". The country was last able to win the music competition in 1997 - the year Muller was born. The winner at the time was the band Katrina and the Waves with the song "Love Shine a Light".
Muller: a dream comes true
"I'm a huge fan of so many artists who have been successful at Eurovision, from ABBA to Måneskin," Muller said on Thursday, adding it was a dream come true for her.
The Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won last year's ESC with their song "Stefania". Normally the competition would therefore take place in Ukraine this year. Because of the ongoing war, however, it will be held in Great Britain, which took second place with Sam Ryder. The Beatles' hometown of Liverpool was able to prevail in a British selection process. Mayor Joanne Anderson announced that she wanted to throw the "best party ever". However, the focus should be on the Ukrainian culture.
