Sci-fi epic: “Dune: Part Two” opens successfully in cinemas

The science fiction epic “Dune: Part Two” is the most successful cinema release of the year so far. On the first weekend, over 608,000 people saw the film in Germany, as the market research company Media Control announced in cooperation with the analyst Comscore on Monday. In North America, the blockbuster reportedly grossed $81.5 million (€78.5 million) at the box office.

As the industry publication “Hollywood Reporter” wrote, the sequel managed to double the results of the first part. According to Variety, it is the most successful theatrical release since Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour. The film brought in $178.5 million (164.6 euros) worldwide, including $8.4 million (7.7 million euros) in Germany, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The second part of “Dune” was released in German cinemas last Thursday. Director Denis Villeneuve's first visually stunning film (2021) was a huge success at the box office. According to the industry portal "Box Office Mojo", "Dune", which was filmed with a budget of around 150 million euros, grossed more than 400 million euros worldwide.

The material is based on a series of novels by Frank Herbert. The story centers on the desert planet Arrakis. Only there is a special, valuable substance - which is why the planet is exploited by other powers in the galaxy and its inhabitants are oppressed. Villeneuve gathered many stars for his film adaptation, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler.

"Dune: Part Two", for example, was more successful in its first weekend than "Oppenheimer" (around 502,600 visitors) last July - but the blockbuster was just unable to catch up with the cinema hit "Barbie" (around 619,000). The cinema opening weekend covers the numbers Thursday to Sunday.
