American royal fans should mark the days from November 30th to December 2nd in their calendars. Because there's the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, in Boston. It is not yet known whether they will meet Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan.
It is extremely likely that the Sussexes will also be on the east coast just a few days after the royals. Because on December 6th they will receive an award in New York.
The "Ripple of Hope" award is organized by the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation and more specifically by Kerry Kennedy. She is the daughter of Robert F. and niece of the assassinated US President John F. Kennedy.
But why do the ex-royals get the prestige award in the first place? Explaining the decision, Kerry Kennedy referred to a speech her father gave in South Africa in 1966. "He also spoke of moral courage, saying that few would have the courage to question their peers, family and community about the power structure they maintained ", she told the Spanish news portal "El Confidencial".
And that's exactly what Meghan and Harry would have done. "They went into the oldest facility in the history of the UK and told them what they were doing wrong, that there couldn't be structural racism within the facility, that they couldn't perpetuate a misconception about mental health," Kennedy said.
"They knew there would be consequences, that they would be ostracized, that they would lose their family and their job and that they would be held responsible. They did it anyway because they felt they couldn't live with themselves , if they would not question that authority. I think they have acted heroically in taking this step," she said, explaining the foundation's decision.
Kerry Kennedy's brother, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., apparently disagrees. He called the election "confusing". Kennedy biographer David Nasaw called the decision "somewhere between subtly ridiculous and blatantly ridiculous" and wondered what the Sussexes would have done to deserve the award.
