For a long time, aliens have been observing Earth's inhabitants in preparation for an invasion. Technologically far superior to humans, the extraterrestrials finally attack with three-legged combat robots. Chaos and hysteria break out, because humanity has nothing to oppose the invaders. In the midst of the action, Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) desperately tries to protect his two children from the alien threat.

Nathalie (Emilia Bernsdorf) is 17 and newly in love. Despite her severe light allergy, her boyfriend Tim (Lennart Betzgen) surprises her with a romantic, wintry trip that ends in drama. In order to help her boyfriend, Nathalie puts herself in danger and the two can only be saved at the last minute. But the result of the subsequent investigation surprises Martin Gruber (Hans Sigl) and arouses terrible suspicions in him.

The criminal and violent biker Sam (Gerard Butler) has just been released from prison. But the world kept turning in his absence. His wife (Michelle Monaghan) quit her job as a stripper and found God. A path that Sam initially sees with scorn and ridicule but ultimately chooses himself after robberies and drug excesses, among other things, make him question the meaning of his life.
