The unscrupulous Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant), a former Pentagon security expert, plans on Independence Day on July 4th to shut down all of the country's computer networks and thus paralyze the United States. John McClane (Bruce Willis) is tasked with stopping Gabriel as all other attempts to stop the plot have failed. With the help of hacker Matt (Justin Long), McClane gets to work. A wild chase soon develops, in which McClane's daughter Lucy is also drawn in.
When the poacher Henrik Jansson is found shot dead on Fårö, inspector Maria Wern (Eva Röse) encounters a number of suspects: Jansson's accomplice Jens Aleskog (Sebastian Sporsén), who is having an affair with his wife Johanna (Maja Rung), the siblings Åsa (Lena Nilsson) and Micke Eriksson (Jimmy Lindström), who found the body, and their father Konrad Eriksson (Sten Ljunggren), who is suffering from dementia and who wanders around the island at night armed with a hunting rifle.
