In the attic of a vacant courtyard, Commissioner Ellen Lucas (Ulrike Kriener) finds a woman's corpse lovingly laid out - mummified by the heat of a summer. The woman had apparently been held captive in the attic and died trying to escape. Lucas quickly finds out that the victim, Sarah Rothbauer (Joschla Weiß), lived nearby. But why didn't anyone miss her there? Inspector Lucas and her team suspect a relationship crime.

Mexican Flor (Paz Vega) and her daughter want to start a new life in Los Angeles. They laid the foundation for this in the home of the Clasky family, where Flor started out as a domestic help. While her child immediately falls into the clutches of the overexcited Mrs. Clasky (Téa Leoni), Flor soon notices that family life is neglected and everyone goes or has to go their own way.
