Practical tips: Removing dog hair - a guide for all furs

The insidious thing about dog hair is that it is really attracted to textiles: Whether on the sofa or on clothing, on the carpet or in bed - your pet leaves its hairy traces everywhere. So that the unruly fur does not spread indiscriminately in the apartment, you should remove the annoying dog hair. We'll tell you here which tips work best.

1. The carpet floor

An adult dog has an average of between 1,000 and 9,000 hairs per square centimeter all over its body. Just for comparison: a person has between 175 and 350 hairs per square centimeter on their head. So it's hardly surprising why the four-legged friends lose so much hair at once - especially when they change their coat.

And they prefer to do this wherever they spend most of their time: i.e. in the entire apartment. While smooth floors are easy to clean, carpeting is a real hair magnet. This is where even the most powerful vacuum cleaner reaches its limits. For this reason there is a special pet hair nozzle that you can connect to almost all vacuum cleaners that have a round connection pipe. The essay is available e.g. here

Tip: If you suffer from back problems, you should clean smooth floors and carpets while standing. All you need is a broom with rubber slats that can be adjusted in height. The dog hair is removed by the static charge - the broom can then be easily cleaned under running water.

2. The upholstered furniture

Whether they are allowed to or not, dogs are only too happy to curl up on the couch and leave tons of hair in their favorite spot - much to the chagrin of their owners. In contrast to a sofa cover made of (artificial) leather, which only needs to be wiped with a damp cloth, dog hair is difficult to remove from upholstered furniture with fabric covers. With the pet hair nozzle attachment mentioned above, you can clean large seating areas, but not cracks. A better choice here is a handheld vacuum that is specifically designed to remove pet hair. With its joint attachment, it can also get into hard-to-reach places and tight spaces. You can find the suction cup here, for example

3. The clothes

Dogs love to be petted, and of course their owners are happy to oblige. The downside, however, is that after cuddling time, their clothes are covered in dog hair. And even if you haven't scratched your pet, their hair will stick to your stuff like a magnet. Especially if your four-legged friend is allowed to sleep in bed or on the couch. This makes it all the more important to have a tool that quickly and effectively removes dog hair from textiles. A lint brush that is reusable (in contrast to a classic lint roller) is best suited for this. The brush is here.

4. The car

Dogs also leave their tracks in the trunk or on the back seats of the car - depending on where you place your four-legged friend while driving. Although the upholstery is usually very robust, it is also difficult to clean. If you want to remove dog hair from the interior, you can use a hair removal brush that was specially developed for textile surfaces and vehicle upholstery. The rubber bristles should be able to remove all hair without damaging the seats. The brush is then cleaned under running water. The car brush is available here, for example

Tip: To prevent dog hair from spreading to the seats in your car, there is a special protective cover for the rear seats and trunk. This is not only abrasion-resistant, scratch-resistant and waterproof - but also easy to clean. The protective cover for the trunk is available here, for example.

5. The dog

Coat care is particularly important so that your four-legged friend does not lose or spread so much hair throughout the apartment in the first place. The more regularly you brush the dog's coat, the more hair you can remove as a precaution. With a brushing glove for pets you kill two birds with one stone: on the one hand you can care for your four-legged friend's fur and remove loose hair, on the other hand you give your pet a soothing massage. What's more, you can also use the glove to remove dog hair from your upholstered furniture. You can find the glove here, for example

Every dog owner knows that their four-legged friends have their very own smell, which sooner or later can sting the nose if it sticks to all textiles. Whether in the apartment (e.g. in bed, on the sofa, in the dog basket, on the carpet) or in the car - dog odors cannot be completely avoided. This is sometimes due to the following reasons:

The question arises as to how the odors can be neutralized as quickly as possible? Try one of the following tips:

If you don't want to wait until the entire apartment or car smells like your dog, you should treat your four-legged friend's fur regularly - preferably with a special shampoo for dogs.

Smaller textiles such as pillows and blankets, which your dog likes to take over, should be washed regularly. The longer your pet spreads its smell, the harder it will be to get rid of it.

If your dog is allowed to lie on the couch, you should protect the spot where it likes to make space with a blanket. For example, if you own a leather couch, you can treat the material with a standard all-purpose cleaner.

If you have a smooth floor, you should mop it regularly. It is best to use a vinegar cleaner or a conventional floor cleaning agent. It is important to know that you can only get rid of the unpleasant odors with hot cleaning water.

There are special cleaning agents with microorganisms that are particularly effective against dog odors. In contrast to other household products, they not only cover up the stench, but also neutralize unpleasant odours. And this despite the fact that they themselves are odorless.

Important note: Many dog owners like to use scented sprays, but these can only mask a dog's smell for a short time. Although they are suitable for textiles, these should not be used in the presence of the animal - the fragrances they contain irritate your dog's mucous membranes and should only be used if your pet will not be in the room for at least two to three hours stops.
