Nine Years of Marriage: John Legend and Chrissy Teigen: How infatuation turned into enduring love

Pop star John Legend, 43, and model Chrissy Teigen, 36, have been happily married for more than nine years. It sparked on the set of a music video back in 2006, but Legend now struggles with his behavior back then. "I think I was more selfish at the time," he said on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast.

"I wasn't a good partner at the beginning of our relationship. Even though I was very much in love with her and really looking forward to being with her. I was still selfish. I was in my mid-20s and not ready to be the committed partner be who I am now."

Over time, he realized that he had to change. He then thought "not only of the joy and the pleasure", but also of the "responsibility" and the "commitment". That was a maturing process. According to Legend, mere infatuation turned into enduring love.

"We've been through enough together that really strengthened us and made us stronger. Those trials made us grow together and made us realize things about each other that we didn't know." The song "I Don't Love You Like I Used To" was also created from this. "It's different now, but it's better."

The marriage to the 36-year-old has so far resulted in daughter Luna, 6, and son Miles, 4. Two years ago, Teigen was pregnant with her third child, but she lost her son, Jack, at 20 weeks to a pregnancy complication.

The model and the musician went public together at the time and spoke of a miscarriage. She corrected that statement in September, speaking of an "abortion to save my life for a baby who had absolutely no chance". In early August, the model happily announced that she was pregnant again.

Legend said on the podcast that he was able to learn a lot about Teigen's personality, which helped him appreciate her even more. "How she reacts to stress, how she reacts to life, how she can find a joke in even the craziest of situations... even in grief she's able to find humor," he added. That sounds like true love.
