Is the next series high-flyer from South Korea already on the way? Streaming services such as Disney, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix have relied on Korean productions for years. The latter's biggest hit was "Squid Game". The absurd social drama from 2021 became Netflix's most successful production, and the main actors became world stars. Of course, the providers also want to convince in 2023 with series, films and reality shows from South Korea. Some series are already in the starting blocks - and these productions have a good chance of triggering new hype.
In December 2022, Netflix released the first part of the revenge series "The Glory". The drama, in which school bullying plays a major role, caused a sensation around the world. Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye-kyo, 41) still suffers from the violence she experienced from her classmates in the past. As a grown woman, she plans a vendetta against the evildoers and those who simply looked the other way. In order to implement her brutal plans, she teams up with Joo Yeo-jeong (Lee Do-hyun, 27), who wants to be her "executioner". Fans will find out how part two of the series will continue from March 10th.
The fans of "Sweet Home" had to be patient for a long time, the first season finally appeared in December 2020. Now Netflix is promising the sequel: The streaming service wants to publish the second season in the fourth quarter of the year. The first season ended on a cliffhanger. The residents of the sealed off high-rise building around Hyun-soo (Song Kang, 28) were able to escape from the building. However, the threat from both the monsters and the military remains. Above all, the mask and costume design convinced the viewers of "Sweet Home" - it remains to be seen whether the makers will surpass themselves again for the second season.
Netflix is already targeting the sci-fi drama "Black Knight" in the second quarter of 2023. The story takes place in future South Korea, 2071 to be precise. Breathing outdoors is no longer possible without gas masks because the air pollution is too high. Only one percent of the original world population is still alive. In this dystopian world, the rich rely on suppliers, one of whom is the legendary 5-8 (Kim Woo-bin, 33). The production is based on Lee Youn-gyun's popular webtoon (online comic) "Delivery Knight" and is one of the most anticipated Korean series in 2023.
With "Gyeongseong Creature" Netflix brings out the high artillery in the fourth quarter. The fantasy thriller series takes place in Korea in 1945. South Korean top stars Park Seo-joon (34, "The Marvels"), Han So-hee (28, "My Name") and "Squid Game" actor Wi Ha-joon (31) meet in this production and investigate mysterious kidnappings. Netflix is already proving that the series is promising in September 2022. The streaming service has already expanded the production to include a second season, long before the first season is released.
Netflix is also delivering a fantasy romance series later this year with See You In My 19th Life. Ban Ji-eum (Shin Hye-sun, 33) has 19 lives, but her 18th life ends prematurely. Ji-eum is mysteriously able to remember her past lives, and in her past life she searches for Moon Seo-ha (Ahn Bo-hyun, 34), who was close to her in her past life. "See You In My 19th Life" is also based on a popular webtoon.
Amazon Prime will also be involved with Korean productions in 2023. The first part of the mystery series "Island" can be seen on Amazon Prime Video from March 13th. Van (Kim Nam-gil, 42), Won Mi-ho (Lee Da-hee, 27) and Johan (Cha Eun-woo, 25) fight evil on Jeju Island and try to free possessed people from their demons. It is not yet known when the second part of the series will appear.
