Music: Paris Opera closes for renovations

Due to extensive renovation and modernization work, the two houses of the Paris Opera under the direction of German artistic director Alexander Neef are expected to close their doors between 2027 and 2030.

As the German Press Agency announced, the Opéra Garnier, whose facade is currently being renovated for around 7 million euros, is expected to close for the 2027/2028 season with around 1,900 seats, and the Opéra Bastille with around 2,700 seats for the 2029/2030 season . Until then, alternative performance spaces could be found.

Neef has been at the helm of the Opéra national de Paris since 2020. His term of office was extended until 2032 a few weeks ago. The 50-year-old took over the renowned houses against the backdrop of economic difficulties, including as a result of ongoing strikes. Under his leadership, the institution made a profit of 2.3 million euros in 2023 - making it profitable for the first time since 2017.
