Make-up and Co.: naturalness meets glamor: These are the beauty trends of 2023

Colorful nails or nude tones? Striking make-up with smokey eyes and red lips or subtle with a few highlights? Beauty salon owner Alina Messaadi reveals to stern which beauty trends are popular in 2022 and which products and looks are already outdated.

The boss of "Malinka" in Hamburg attaches great importance to naturalness, but also knows: "The unnatural look will probably never die out." She sees the reason for this on platforms like Instagram: "You see yourself completely differently through the filter and many people like this look."

Therefore, some beauty trends are adapted to it: facial features can be emphasized with the help of highlighters and contouring, lips can look voluminous with the help of a lip gloss. However, natural shades are particularly popular: "Natural glosses and nude lipsticks are still the front runners. There are also glosses that fill out the lips a little - a good way to avoid having to go to the doc and avoid a 'beaky effect' to have."

The Klarna trend report also confirms that glosses and more natural colors are popular. This is based on a representative study for which 3,060 people in Germany and Austria aged between 18 and 55 were interviewed. Including 51 percent who have assigned themselves to the female gender and 49 percent who have assigned themselves to the male gender. It states that buyers in Germany and Austria are currently most likely to choose natural or classic tones for lipsticks: trend and beauty-savvy people between the ages of 18 and 44 gave the colors nude (25 percent), pink (23 percent) and dark red (15 percent) as favorites. According to the survey, lip glosses, which make lips look fuller, are currently back in fashion. Not much has changed in that regard lately.

When it comes to make-up, the beauty expert sees the trend moving towards naturalness: "Glow and natural looks are in vogue. Brush up your eyebrows, apply mascara to your eyelashes, apply a light bronzer and highlighter to your cheekbones, use a natural lip gloss - and a natural look is already created." Even small wrinkles around the eyes do not have to be hidden under layers of make-up. "We should all age naturally and be proud of every wrinkle that life has given us," says Messaadi.

Naturalness is also back in fashion when it comes to nail trends: according to the latest trend survey by Klarna, round or oval nails are in fashion, not pointed ones. Even eye-catching patterns on the nails are now rather out. Instead, it can be small, fine highlights. Among those surveyed with an affinity for trends and beauty, the colors dark red (21 percent) and classic red (twelve percent) as well as pink (ten percent), nude (nine percent), coral/peach (nine percent) and pastel tones (seven percent) asked. Pastel shades are particularly popular with younger people.

Alina Messaadi also thinks that vegan nail polish is a great alternative to classic nail polish - even if it doesn't last as long as non-vegan nail polish. "That shouldn't be a reason to only use non-vegan nail polish."

The trends in decorative cosmetics are therefore moving in the direction of naturalness with a little glamour. And natural ingredients are also in the lead in cosmetics, and buyers and brands also attach more importance to sustainable packaging. When it comes to anti-aging, those surveyed rely primarily on products with hyaluronic acid: 22 percent consider it the most effective ingredient. Acid is number one in all age groups and explicitly among trend and beauty affine people. This is followed by products containing vitamin C (16 percent) and retinol (15 percent).

Klarna has also launched a survey to identify trends over the 2022 holidays. The beauty trend is confirmed here: naturalness with a glow is particularly popular, but from time to time it can also be red lips or nails. It's becoming clear: in 2023, less is more when it comes to beauty trends. But it can also be a little glamor - to emphasize the natural beauty a little more and get the best out of our skin.
