James Cameron: The "Avatar 2" director shoots at Marvel

The long-awaited "Avatar" sequel "Avatar: The Way of Water" will be released in German cinemas on December 14th. Director and Oscar winner James Cameron (68) is currently promoting the sequel to the best-selling Hollywood film to date - and on the occasion could not resist another broadside against Marvel and their superhero universe. Asked whether the effects in "Avatar 2" could be compared to the Marvel villain Thanos, which was also created using motion capture, Cameron replied: "Thanos? Come on. You wouldn't believe that yourself. [...] Not even remotely."

At the beginning of the interview with "ComicBook.com", Cameron had promised: "I want to say in advance that I will not put down the Marvel or DC Universe". Cameron went on to say that the superhero film boom has brought many talented people into the special effects field. The New Zealand effects company Weta FX, who created the blue Na'vi in "Avatar: The Way of Water" using motion capture, would also benefit from this.

Incidentally, this isn't the first time Cameron has fired a broadside at the hugely successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. The filmmaker told The New York Times in October: "When I watch these big, spectacular [Marvel and DC] movies, it doesn't matter how old the characters are, they all act like they are at college". The Marvel characters "won't experience the things that really ground us," Cameron said, "and I don't think that's how movies should be made."
