The day her life was turned upside down, she was too late. Summer 1981, Aelrun Goette rushed through the East Berlin S-Bahn station Grünau on the way to school. She usually avoided public places because a patch of "Swords to Ploughshares," a symbol of the peace movement, was stuck to her jacket sleeve. "I ran straight into the police's arms," says Goette today. They arrested her, the hope of getting her high school diploma was gone. "The school management certified that I was not a mature socialist personality," says Goette. "I was able to forget about studying."
