House of the Dragon is HBO's biggest hit since Game of Thrones

On Sunday evening, the finale of the first "House of the Dragon" season flickered on the screens of HBO and its streaming service HBO Max. As Warner Bros. Discovery, the owner of HBO, now announced itself, the season finale premiered on the evening 9.3 million viewers in the US across premium cable channel HBO, HBO Max and more. This makes the "House of the Dragon" finale HBO's most successful since the end of "Game of Thrones" in 2019.

"We are so thrilled to see House of the Dragon engaging Game of Thrones fans around the world," said Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, in a statement. According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the episodes of the first "House of the Dragon" season are viewed by an average of 29 million viewers. The audience of the premiere evening thus tripled through time-shifted streams or repetitions on the HBO channel.

In May 2019, the series finale of "Game of Thrones" was watched by a total of 19.3 million viewers on the evening of its release, as "Deadline" reports. The seventh and final season of the parent series "House of the Dragon" was viewed by an average of 32.8 million pairs of eyes in the United States when time-shifted streams and reruns are included. In view of the extremely strong viewership of "House of the Dragon", HBO will probably continue to expand the "Game of Thrones" series universe. In addition to the already officially ordered second "House of the Dragon" season, for example, a "GoT" offshoot with Kit Harington (35) as Jon Snow is in the works.
