Hollywood: First trailer for Nolan's "Oppenheimer" online

Director Christopher Nolan (52, "The Dark Knight") has released the first trailer for his new film "Oppenheimer". The video alternates images of giant fireballs with scenes featuring main character J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy).

Among other things, calculations for the construction of an atomic bomb and the development of a test bomb are indicated. "We imagine a future, and our ideas shock us," says the nuclear physicist. The final shot shows a trembling hand over a red button.

The biopic about the "father of the atomic bomb" takes place during World War II, when Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was instrumental in the development of the atomic bomb. The American of German-Jewish descent led the top-secret Manhattan Project in Los Alamos. After the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, Oppenheimer was shocked by the destructive power of the bomb, campaigned against the use of nuclear weapons and became the victim of an anti-communist hunt in the USA.

Alongside Irishman Murphy, the star-studded drama will also star Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Florence Pugh, among others. Nolan wrote the screenplay based on the biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's book won a 2006 Pulitzer Prize. "Oppenheimer" hits US theaters on July 21, 2023. In Germany, the theatrical release is planned for July 20, 2023.
