Harrison Ford: 'Indiana Jones 5' wasn't 'necessary'

Harrison Ford (80) will return to one of his most iconic roles next June. In the as yet untitled Indiana Jones 5, the star once again wields the whip as the eponymous archaeologist, continuing the adventure film series following 2008's moderately-received Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Speaking to Empire, Ford, now 80, said: "I didn't feel the need to do another [Indiana Jones] movie."

He only agreed to the project because the script convinced him and offered a chance to "expand the character". In his opinion, what is particularly appealing about "Indiana Jones 5" is that the cult figure he plays is "at the end of his journey". He promises "lots of adventure, laughter and real emotions" for the upcoming film. In addition, "Indiana Jones 5" is "complex and sophisticated". During the roughly eight months of filming, the star injured his shoulder in a fight scene. "The shooting was hard, long and arduous, but I'm very happy with the film that we have," he concludes in retrospect.

"Empire" magazine is dedicating a major cover story to the upcoming "Indiana Jones" film and presents a series of new scenes that can also be seen in "Collider". The report for the fifth entry in the hit franchise also reveals that most of the action is set in 1969. Scenes also show "Fleabag" star Phoebe Waller-Bridge (37), who embodies the goddaughter of the main character in "Indiana Jones 5" and obviously plunges into breakneck adventures on "Indy's" side. Her character is called Helena and is described by director James Mangold (58) in "Empire" as a "charming trickster".

Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (57), who specializes in villains, plays a Nazi who works in the USA for NASA's moon landing program in the new film. The character Voller is based on the real-life German scientist Wernher von Braun (1912-1977), who helped establish the United States' missile program after World War II. US actor Boyd Holbrook (41) embodies the right hand of Mikkelsen's villains with the character Klaber in "Indiana Jones 5".

It was previously announced that lead actor Ford will be digitally rejuvenated for the upcoming film's opening action sequence. The star himself described the resulting scenes as "a bit scary", but was also convinced of the result.
