“Game of Thrones”: Martin hopes for three animated series

The hit HBO series “Game of Thrones” could have three animated spin-offs. This is what the writer George R. R. Martin (75), the inventor of the fantasy world, is now suggesting. In his blog he says that work has already gone into three projects, but they are not yet in production.

A series that Martin has nothing to do with has now apparently inspired him to share this news with his fans. Together with his wife Parris, he discovered the Netflix animated series “Blue Eye Samurai”. It's "great" and "if you like my own stuff, you'll love [the series]," he enthuses.

Coincidentally, he and HBO have “our own animated projects,” which, like “Game of Thrones,” are based on his “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels. None of the projects have been given the green light for production yet, "but I think we're close to taking the next step with some of them."

There was originally an idea to create four animated series, but two of them were put on hold. “However, work on the other two animation projects continues quickly,” assures Martin. In addition, the spin-off “Nine Voyages” is no longer planned as a live-action film, but as an animated production.

Martin “fully” supports this step, as he explains. According to him, a live version would be difficult to implement due to budget restrictions - "especially since half of the series takes place at sea and a different port has to be created every week."

"There's a whole world out there. And we have a much better chance of showing it all with animation," Martin continues. "So we have three animated projects in the works now. Will any of them air? [...] There's no way to know. Nothing is certain in Hollywood."
