Film Festival: Berlinale shows Helen Mirren's new film "Golda"

In her new film, Helen Mirren plays the Israeli politician Golda Meir. The premiere of "Golda" is planned for Monday at the Berlin Film Festival. A press conference (2.30 p.m.) is planned first, followed by a screening in the Festival Palace on Potsdamer Platz in the evening (6.15 p.m.). The program also includes "Inside" with Willem Dafoe and "Seneca" with John Malkovich and Geraldine Chaplin. The Berlinale is one of the major film festivals.

The Berlinale weekend had previously ended with two eagerly awaited premieres. The director Margarethe von Trotta presented her film about the writer Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973). The topic was suggested to her. "It very often comes from outside," von Trotta said before the performance. Vicky Krieps plays Bachmann. Ronald Zehrfeld plays the author Max Frisch, with whom Bachmann was in a relationship. In the film title she saw two things, explained von Trotta - on the one hand a journey into the emotional desert with Frisch, on the other hand a journey into the desert that Ingeborg Bachmann redeemed.

New flick from Damon and Affleck

The premiere of "Kiss the Future" by director Nenad Cicin-Sain was also celebrated in another Berlinale cinema. The film, which was produced by US actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, among others, uses impressive images to describe the idea, preparation and realization of a concert by the Irish band U2 in 1997 after the end of the war in Sarajevo, which was besieged by Serbian troops for years. To the delight of the audience, U2 singer Bono also appeared in Berlin for the film premiere.

The end of the film draws a link to the war in Ukraine, making it clear that such projects are still necessary for peace. "I'd love to do a lot of documentaries like this, but this one [project] came straight to me," said Damon. "In this case it was a blessing, it's an incredible story."

Impressive films are currently being made about the war in Ukraine, said Damon. "I'm sure there will be a lot more produced in the future." He himself is not currently working on such a project. "I have someone there to do research at the moment, but that's at a very early stage."
