Tesla's blocks of shares had lost so much in value that Musk "only" had assets of $185.3 billion after his $44 billion purchase of Twitter. Thanks to stock gains, Arnault just overtook Musk on Wednesday morning with his fortune of $185.4 billion. Around noon, however, Musk regained his first place.

About three hours later, Arnault was back at number one, this time with a fortune of $184.7 billion, while Musk was $100 million behind him. When the US market closed, Musk was ahead again with 700 million more than Arnault, as "Forbes" reports.

Musk first took his place as the richest person in the world in September 2021 when he trumped Amazon boss Jeff Bezos (58). His wealth peaked in November 2021 when the Tesla boss owned an estimated $320 billion. Musk had to sell blocks of shares to buy social media platform Twitter, which has impacted the value of Tesla shares.
