Election in Brazil: Leonardo DiCaprio celebrates Lula's election victory

Leonardo DiCaprio (47) is pleased with the outcome of the election in Brazil. "The outcome of the Brazilian elections offers an opportunity to change the course of history, not just for Brazil and the Amazon, but for the whole world," the Hollywood star wrote on Twitter.

Left challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (77) narrowly defeated right-wing incumbent Jair Bolsonaro (67) in Sunday's runoff. Lula was Brazil's head of state from 2003 to 2010.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been passionate about environmental protection for many years, particularly emphasizes the importance of Lula's victory in the fight against climate destruction. The star added a photo of the Amazon to his statement.

A day before the election, Leonardo DiCaprio tweeted that the Amazon region was "the mother of our biodiversity and the protector of our future on earth." He also called the election trend-setting for the future prevention of climate catastrophes. Jair Bolsonaro had announced further clearing of the rainforest if he won the election. Lula, on the other hand, promised to act against the deforestation of the forest, which is considered the "green lung" of the planet.

In addition to Leonardo DiCaprio, other US celebrities also commented. "The elections in Brazil can decide whether the Amazon rainforest remains the lungs of the world or is cleared for short-term profit," wrote Barbra Streisand (80). "Our warming planet needs the Amazon lest it be destroyed," she noted on Twitter.

"Extremism and fascism were defeated in Brazil," wrote "Star Trek" star George Takei (85) pointedly on Twitter. "Let's do the same in America".
