Dwayne Johnson's "Black Adam" and more: The cinema highlights in October

October in the cinema is traditionally in the hands of horror - after all, year after year new shockers want to position themselves just in time for the horror festival of Halloween. 2022 is no exception either, with "Halloween Ends" the reboot trilogy of John Carpenter's (74) cult film from 1978 should come to an end - and so should Michael Myers? A beginning could make even bigger waves than this finale: With "Black Adam" Dwayne Johnson (50) celebrates the start of his career as a DC superhero. Speaking of high waves: The strip "The Woman King" with Viola Davis (57) has already caused them in the USA - and not only in a positive way.

The Agojie, an all-female unit of warriors, defended the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century with remarkable martial arts and ferocity the world had never seen before. Inspired by true events, The Woman King tells the emotional and epic journey of General Nanisca (Davis) as she recruits and prepares a next generation of warriors to fight an enemy that threatens to destroy their way of life. Because some things are worth fighting for!

Assessment:

Based on a true story, the strip by Gina Prince-Bythewood (53) was already well received in the US at the box office. Last but not least, the once again self-sacrificing leading actress, Oscar winner Viola Davis, is particularly praised. This is quite astonishing, because "The Woman King" faced strong headwinds in the run-up to its release. The accusation: It glorifies a tribe that was actively involved in the slave trade. Even the hashtag

Four years have passed since the bloody events of Halloween Kills. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, 63) now lives with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak, 28) and is writing her memoir. Psychopathic serial killer Michael Myers has never been seen since. Reason enough for Laurie to finally let go of the terror that has haunted her reality for decades and determined her to turn her back on fear and anger and enjoy her life. But when young babysitter Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell, 25) is accused of murdering a young boy, it sparks a wave of violence and terror that forces Laurie to once again face the ultimate evil.

Assessment:

Is the new edition of the "Halloween" series getting the curve again? The attractive start of the new trilogy was followed by a more than moderate sequel with "Halloween Kills". If part three doesn't want to disappear like all the other sequels to the original from 1978, it has to deliver. After all: The end of part two created good conditions for Jamie Lee Curtis' character Laurie to compete against her nemesis with a lot of anger in her stomach - and hopefully finally finish it off.

It's been almost 5,000 years since the ancient gods gifted Black Adam (Johnson) with unimaginable powers. Almost as long he eked out his existence in captivity. But now he has been freed from his earthly dungeon - and is determined to unleash his very own form of revenge on the modern world.

Assessment:

Hard to believe, but Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson had to wait until 2022 before he too can join the well-known ranks of actresses and actors who embody comic book characters. However, it wasn't enough for top dog Marvel, "Black Adam" comes from the DC and thus from the Batman universe. Outside of the comic bubble, the antihero Black Adam is unlikely to say anything to anyone - but that can also be seen as an opportunity. This gives Johnson the opportunity to put his own stamp on the character.
